Travel with grace

I rarely write about this. But recent events have made it impossible to stay quiet.

Switzerland hotels are now issuing formal conduct guidelines to Indian guests. Read that again.

India is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. We're commanding rooms in boardrooms globally. And yet, some of us are leaving impressions abroad that are making it harder for every Indian traveller who follows the rules.

I work with organisations on cross-cultural sensitisation.

And the question I keep coming back to is this: why do we leave our values at the departure gate? Whether it's being disruptive in public spaces, disregarding hotel policies, or treating locals as props for content — these aren't small things. They compound.

They create perceptions that affect all of us. Travel is a privilege. Representing your country while doing so is a responsibility.

A few things I always share with clients before international travel:

→ Research the cultural norms and etiquette of your destination

→ Practise basic courtesy from the moment you board

→ Dress appropriately, especially at religious or heritage sites

→ Be mindful of noise and space in public areas

→ Treat locals with the same dignity you'd want to receive

Our culture has always valued hospitality, humility, and grace. Let's be known for that — everywhere we go.
